3 Reasons You Don't Keep Your New Year's Resolutions - And What You Can Do To Be Successful in 2015!

January 3, 2015

With 2014 behind us, most of us will spend some time thinking about what we want to accomplish in the year to come.

While self improvement is something most of us strive for on a regular basis,

this time of year we tend to universally reflect on the ways we want to better ourselves and our quality of life. Some of us aspire to become more organized, while others have hopes of spending less and saving more.

By far the most popular New Year's Resolution or goal at this time is ... Any guesses?  You got it, weight loss!

The percentage of people who make New Year's Resolutions is roughly half the population. Those of us who actually keep these New Years Resolutions, however, is less than 10%. Yikes!

Why is that? Well, there are a number of reasons: our budget is tighter so we opt out of our gym membership, we realize the time commitment is greater than we anticipated, or we can't seem to commit to leaving work an extra 30 minutes early so it's too dark to run outside.

Below are the most common reasons you are not keeping your New Year's Resolutions. If you can master these, you will likely be far more successful with achieving your goals and sticking to your weight loss goals:

1. You have unrealistic expectations.

Creating a goal is extremely important when starting with any weight loss program. However, many of us have high expectations to "lose 25 pounds by Valentines Day" and when we don't see immediate results, we tend to give up - or worse, self sabotage.

To avoid falling into this trap, try setting smaller goals for yourself. For example, "I will lose 1 lb each week. I expect to have some weeks where I may plateau, but I will aim to just not gain back any weight that I've already lost."

Seeing results from smaller goals you've set will motivate you to keep moving forward rather than feeling defeated.

2. Your goal is not specific enough.

Be clear about your goals and why you want to accomplish them. An example of a common goal people make is, "I will go to the gym every week."

While this is an excellent goal, you may also find yourself falling short of this goal without even realizing it. For example, you miss the 5:30pm class because a client called at 5:15pm just as you were leaving the office.

Instead, try something along the lines of "I will to the gym 3 times each week for at least 60 minutes, aiming to hit the 5:30 pm classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and if I miss those classes I will use the treadmill. Be more specific with times, days and be sure to quantify.

3. You are riding solo.

Accountability is not something we need because we are weak, it is something we need because we are human!

Trying to accomplish any goal with little or no support is tough, but attempting to conquer your weight loss or fitness goals alone can be like trying to run a marathon without anyone on the sidelines to cheer you on.

Whether it's your co-worker, a new friend you met in class or an accountability & Health Coach & Personal Trainer like myself, don't start this alone! Check in regularly with each other and be sure to see if you accomplished your weekly goals instead of brushing those under the rug.

Most of us are entirely capable of accomplishing our resolutions, but we simply need to set ourselves up for success in order to see them through. If you make these small but significant changes to your current resolutions, you will be far more likely to achieve the results you want.

I wish you a very Happy & Healthy 2015!  Check out some of our upcoming events like our Open House, 60 Day Challenge or Boot Camps to help you get started on the right track.  As always, if you have any questions, comments, or need some extra support contact me so I can help you reach your fitness goals.
